Amid the ongoing nationwide protests, a family in Kano State is demanding justice for the death of their 25-year-old son during the rally, which turned violent with police. The unfortunate occurrence occurred on Saturday, August 3, in the Rijiyar Lemo and Kurnar Asabe regions of Fagge Local Government Area, killing at least eight individuals. According to the Daily Trust, the confrontation began when protesters in Rijiyar Lemo, located on Katsina Road, battled with police personnel. Bashir Muhammad Lawan, a 25-year-old guy, was shot and killed during the incident. His relatives, who were extremely saddened by his death, described the horrible events.
Bashir's father, Malam Muhammad Lawal, claimed that his son had just been outside the house for 15 minutes before joining the protest. "He was out on the road with other people holding placards during the peaceful protest until around Zuhr time, when security agents arrived to disperse them." They were chanting 'bama yi, bama yi' (to hell with you), and then the guards started shooting, injuring my kid," the anguished father explained. According to him, the situation became tense when the mob began yelling 'bama yi, bama yi' (to hell with you) as police arrived. Witnesses and family report that the cops used live bullets when the demonstrators began booing them.
Bashir's older sister, Khadija Bala, recall the awful incident, saying; "He was attempting to seek cover when he was hit by gunshots. They were protesting peacefully, but were labelled as 'yan daba' (thugs). Poor people should not be denied the freedom to protest. "We demand justice for Bashir."
